Lightning Fail

11 Lightning-FailAfter my previous lightning photo, I thought it only appropriate to upload this one. This photograph was taken back in 2004 on 35mm, but the roll of film disappeared… until last week. I was a little surprised when I picked up the prints, as I had no idea what was on the roll of film. To be honest, I had no idea what was on any of them, but this roll I thought was gone forever.

For me, this picture illustrates perfectly the act of shooting lightning. There is no lightning you say?… Exactly!

I was driving home as the storm started, with my trusty old slr sitting on the passenger seat. Perfect I thought and pulled over where seemed like a good angle. I crouched down in the boot of my car with the camera propped up on credit cards, socks and whatever other junk I had jammed under the seat. I watched and waited, trying my hardest to time my exposures, but every single fork of lightning, struck a split second before or after I opened the shutter. How many duplicates of this image did I shoot? about 20… and not once did I get a lightning strike on film… Ah well, that’s what it’s all about.
