One of my fondest memories as a kid, was the annual road trip with my family to the Riverland. Each year my Dad would compete in the Murray 400, a 404km slog of a canoe marathon, held over a 5 day period. Without fail, my Mum, Sister and I would be there at the riverbank, cheering him on at each checkpoint. Sure, sometimes we weren’t too happy about the cold, early starts, but I know that none of us would have had it any other way.
Going on to compete at World Masters in n Stockton on Tees, Dad’s achievements in this and a plethora of other events (if you could only see the collection of medals!) truly was testament to his passion and dedication to the sport and was a huge influence on me. I only hope, should I become a father, that I’ll provide the same strong and positive influence.
After years of racing, it’s all wound back a little now. The Race Kayak traded for a Surf Ski and a River for the Ocean, but Dad’s happy place is as clear as it ever was. How it took me so long to send him out with a camera, I’ll never know.
For this video, I sent Dad out with a GoPro3 on the Ski (several times), my Mum shot the behind the scenes on a D4 and my Dog ‘Matilda’ did nothing, but was good company all the same. Quite the family day out, if only my Sister was here too.
